A Message from the WITA Executive Board
As we look forward to the February break, the WITA Executive Board would like to thank everyone who participated in last week's letter-writing campaign. On Thursday night, approximately 1,600 letters were delivered to West Islip Board of Education President Anthony Tussie and Superintendent Dr. Romanelli. These letters will be sent to Governor Kathy Hochul, NYS Senator Alexis Weik, NYS Senator Monica Martinez, and NYS Assemblyman Michael Durso in response to the changes that have been proposed, not only in West Islip but in public schools throughout New York State. Mr. Tussie and Dr. Romanelli expressed their appreciation for WITA’s support in advocating for the students, staff, and community.
Advocating for our profession and colleagues is one of the most basic functions of a union. The governor’s proposed changes would have drastic and long-lasting consequences, not only in West Islip but throughout all of public education in New York State. The signed letters delivered to the district’s elected representatives should not be considered the only avenue for restoring the proposed cuts. We encourage you to use our letter as a template, contact your representatives, and advocate for these changes.
