Many retirees wish they had begun focusing on financial and retirement planning much earlier in their lives. To help active members avoid that pitfall, NYSTRS offers a proactive approach to retirement preparation: the Pension & Retirement Education Program (PREP).

The fall 2024 schedule of PREP seminars is available on the Retirement Planning/Pension & Retirement Education Program page at nystrs.org. There are three upcoming seminars on Long Island:

  1. Stonybrook, on Wednesday, November 13th
  2. Plainview, on Thursday, November 14th
  3. Stonybrook, on Wednesday, December 11th

See the link above for information on how to register.

PREP seminars educate members of all ages and career stages on the value of careful financial and retirement planning. It further helps them understand their NYSTRS benefits and how their future pension fits into their overall retirement picture. This information is central to helping members plan and achieve their retirement goals.

The half-day seminars, which are free and held throughout the state, cover a comprehensive range of topics: NYSTRS benefits, financial planning, Social Security, estate planning, and the retirement process. This ensures that you thoroughly understand all aspects of retirement planning. Seminars are held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. There is no fee to attend, and members are welcome to bring a guest, but all attendees must be registered in advance. (Note: These seminars are not designed for individual retirement counseling.)

Spots for these popular seminars fill up quickly, so we advise you to register soon. The NYSTRS website includes instructions for making reservations, which are accepted in the order they are received.

NYSTRS begins taking reservations for its three PREP schedules during the year in mid-September (fall schedule), mid-December (winter/spring schedule), and mid-May (summer schedule). PREP seminars are not intended for individual benefits counseling. Members interested in a benefits consultation should visit the Retirement Planning/Benefits Consultations page of the NYSTRS website to learn how to schedule a personal consultation.
