With BSFD we will #ClapBecauseWeCare

This is a special message specifically for members who live in Bay Shore with the hope that efforts will spread to districts across Long Island.

This Sunday at 7 PM, in coordination with the Bay Shore Fire Department, other teachers' unions on Long Island, and other union households in our community, we are asking all of our members who live in the Bay Shore/Brightwaters area to come out and clap, bang pans and make some noise for our healthcare workers. If this is a success in Bay Shore, we are considering working with the West Islip Fire Department to bring it to our community. This two minute salute has been very popular in New York City, has spread throughout the world, and now has a place on Long Island.

Southside Hospital has been one of the hardest hit hospitals in the region and many of our family members and students' parents work there and at Good Samaritan. Over 30 people have died from the coronavirus at Southside, and a temporary hospital is being built on Main Street to accommodate the hundreds more expected to be admitted in the weeks to come. So this Sunday, April 12th at 7 pm, open your windows, come out onto your front porch, the driveway, or front yard and let them know that you appreciate the sacrifices they are making. The two minute salute will mean a lot; encourage your neighbors to join you. Make it a thing, because "we are all in this together." Of course, please practice social distancing. See you (or hear you) on Sunday!
