At 9 pm last night an automated call went out to West Islip parents announcing that the District was cleared to reopen the buildings, but a decision was made in the best interest of its teachers and students to keep those buildings closed until Monday, March 16th.

Over the past 48 hours, our union leadership has been in contact with our school leaders to voice our many concerns. The health and safety of our students and members are our number one concern.

At one point, it was suggested that all students remain home while school staff and teachers report to work. This was not a good idea. We made it very clear to our school leaders that we were in no way in favor of that idea. While our school leaders had closed-door sessions with respective Health Departments, a decision was made to close all the schools, do a thorough clean-up, then reopen on Monday.

The superintendent contacted the union with this decision. We made it very clear that decisions that affect our member’s health and safety must be made in coordination with us. Although some heated discussions did ensue, we understand that this is a stressful time for all parties involved. We are not defending their process, but we do understand the tremendous pressure they were under.

As we weather this pandemic, it’s important that we all, remain calm and carry on. Our students, the families that entrust us with their children, and our profession warrant such a response.

Please know that your union has your back every step of the way.
